Ultrasonic welding of CF/PEEK composites: Influence of welding parameters on interfacial temperature profiles and mechanical properties

This work focuses on ultrasonic (US) welding of CF/PEEK composite containing a PEI layer at the interface. Welding time, load and amplitude are defined as parameters. The influence each parameter is assessed by temperature measurement mechanical tests US specimens. 80-μm diameter thermocouples integrated into interfacial polymer for in-situ monitoring maximum profile during phase. Only time have an both temperatures lap shear strengths (LSS). highest LSS close to 50 MPa, achieved in those cases around 580°C. Interfacial fractures occur PEEK. PEI-based fracture mostly brittle whereas PEEK-based competition between ductile fracture. Finally, within PEI/PEEK blend can occur. Raman spectroscopy effectively used quantify thickness this zone, it about 0.075 mm.
